Music and Poetry curated by Nikki Bennett and Tom Lockett
An evening of original music and poetry on Thursday 5 July at 7.30pm at West Kirby Arts Centre. Sounds of Wirral celebrates the sights and sounds of Wirral. Curated by Nikki Bennett and Tom Lockett, it features the première performance of some new songs composed by Tom Lockett based on poetry from Gladys Mary Coles’ Wirral Anthology as well as readings and performances of new poetry and music about Wirral.
Nikki Bennett has six collections of poetry, two CDs and poems in various anthologies. Her collection Love Shines Beyond Grief was nominated for the ‘Ted Hughes Award for New Poetry’ 2010. She has read at poetry group readings and festivals in the UK, the USA and Europe. She is a member of The Poetry Society and of The Society of Women Writers and Journalists, and founded ‘uni-verse’ poetry group in Bath. Since moving to Wirral in 2011 she has been an active participant and supporter of poetry events in Liverpool, Wirral and Chester. Nikki believes in writing as communication and therapy, has been part of a team reading poetry in Care Homes and supports the work of Lapidus – Creative Writing for Wellbeing.
Tom Lockett is a West Kirby based composer and performer. He has been part of the local music scene for several years. He performs regularly as part of folk duo, The Kirk Owls and is the founder and leader of Newton Community Choir awhich specialises in performing new music by local composers. Often using the Wirral and Liverpool for inspiration, he has written many songs about the local area and has also worked with many local poets setting their works to music.
